April 2008 - John Sankok, Administrator

The HM will have a Board starting this year.  It will address title deed issues related to the clinics.

Administratively there are several things to report: 1. the HM fills out lots of reports for various groups, 2. the HM is starting staff appraisals, 3. the HM is starting to make strategic plans, annual plans, and get “baseline” information as they are getting pressure to know what geographic areas they serve.

Financial changes to the HM system include setting up policies, conforming documentation processes to international standards, and budgeting for 2008.

John noted that NHM is not registered separately; it is still under CMF.

The HM has enhanced the networking of Masai ministries by hiring out NTC often for seminars (I think John said they spent almost Ksh500,000 for that in 2007), holding a course at KTC, and paying for pastors training in HIV/AIDS.

Facilities needs presented were for staff houses at Talek (some money already raised) and Aitong, electricity at Ewaso Ngiro (on the way, funded by CMF), water system improvement at Ewaso Ngiro (in process), and the MOH is saying the HM needs to develop facilities to deliver babies.  The HM is working to raise funds.

Kenya’s current situation has meant fewer patients traveling, so less income.  In addition, no tourists in the Mara, no markets to sell cows, so people don’t have money to pay for health care.  This has meant the number of debts people owe the clinics is going up.  (The HM had been working hard on bringing these debts down.)  Prices are going up for fuel and vehicle maintenance.  Another thing affected by the post-election problems was the postponement of the HM/Board meeting.  Lastly, John noted that the clinics don’t close due to chaos.

HM relationship to CCC – There will be a CCC rep on the HM/Board.  The other links to CCC are these: 1. many employees are CCC members, including James Karienke, a pastor and community health worker,  2.  HM educated 80 peer educators, all from CCC, on HIV/AIDS in 2007, 3.  HM trained 50 community health workers in 2007, who were chosen by CCC, 4.  HM administers CCTO funds for OVCs from different CCC clusters,  5.  HM supported and led many church-based trainings on HIV/AIDS in 2006 – 2007.
